YouthMappers hosts 2 to 3 yMap series events per semester in the form of workshops, lectures, and seminars. We also do OpenStreetMap (OSM) “mapathons” from YouthMappers featured projects where you can learn to digitize and spend some time mapping places in need. Periodically, we will host mapping events responding to crises where geospatial data can provide some relief. See the calendar of events below for details. History of Events

October 2023. Presentation. Invited speaker from the Executive Director of Academic Initiatives and Integrity (Dr. Chris Bryson) to talk to our department about ethical implications of artificial intelligence in the geosciences and in academia more broadly. New Horizons with ChatGPT: Ethical Implications for Geoscience Students.

October 2023. Outreach. YouthMappers presentation at the Razorback Reveal – an introduction to the Department of Geosciences and our YouthMappers chapter given to high school students interested in geography and geology.

November 2023. GIS Day Mapathon. Hands-on-experience using OSM to map areas in response to an earthquake in Morocco Earthquake via the HOT tasking manager. Buildings, roads among others were mapped to contribute to the already existing projects.

April 2023. Demonstration. An sUAS (small unmanned aircraft systems) demonstration led by Emma Menio, PhD student in the Department of Geosciences.

March 2023. Workshop. An introduction to Google Earth Engine led by Abdullah Al Saim, PhD student in the Department of Geosciences. Introduction to Google Earth Engine: Mapping terrain, temperature, and precipitation across Bangladesh.

February 2023. Workshop. An introduction to OpenStreetMap led by Cassandra Howe, PhD student in the Department of Geosciences. Workshop event to learn how to use OSM and contribute to the mapping response following an earthquake in Turkey/Syria.
